Hello, my mac has starting making a ticking noise from the hard drive, its a 7200 200g, mac is only around 8 months old, but it is so slow on start up, and you can hear this noise in till it logs in and all programs are loaded then its fine,

Do you think the hard drive is on its way out hard drive is

Thanks

Make sure you have a Backup. Use Time Machine or Carbon Copy cloner or just Disk Utility to create a good backup and do it regularly until you can source a new drive or the one you have dies. I'd personally buy a new one immediately.

thanks, ive done a backup using time machine, but only my users folder as i couldnt get all the other problems to work, how do you do a restore then?

also would the HD be covered under warranty

its not a loud click more like a soft clicking noise coming from the HD,
just the slowness that is worring me as i have done a disk repair and check it, and do not have anything on startup

Yes, I understand. That's why I posted that link. It's worth running some tests and sending your data in.

My 8 month old drive hasn't started making noises yet but SMARTutility has identified "old-age" related problems. It may be due to excessive cycling, as may your problem.

hmm...seems like you have the same laptop as i do.
my 200g 7200rpm is very quite...
in the event i would hear any type of noise i have not heard it the past, i would consider taking it into my local apple store and set up an appointment with the only genius behind the bar that isnt a turd.

making sure you have a back up is very important, because if the problem increases...you may have to just get a new drive.
