I have a nearly 2010 macbook pro under apple care and I upgraded the HDD to a 1tb and used the 500gb stock as an external hdd, but this external hdd is beginning to fail and not work anymore, it doesn't have the OS installed, it's blank. Would I be able to get a replacement under the apple care or has removing it from the computer removed the apple care on it?

I say you install back the original drive and take it to apple. Good luck. It should be under waranty, but you never know what surprises Apple Geniuses can bring.
