I have a new generation Macbook Pro and I know it has been mentioned that they run hot when graphically intense programs are running and other media programs. Right now I have the basic software and iWork installed on it. What else could I use to help with the heat and what setting should I use.

This is my first mac and any help I can get would be good

Setting? I would recommend you put it into "Better battery life" mode (system prefs -> Energy Saver) instead of high performance. It is noticeably warmer with the 9600m graphics even when idle. I've done benchmarks in GeekBench, and it gave me the same score in both settings because it doesn't test graphics. So unless you're playing games or using some GPU accelerated software, it doesn't make sense use "Higher performance"

Surface

Don"t forget about the surface your using the notebook on. Make sure it's one that will allow it to breath.
