Macbook Pro Help: Backlight works but no image

I am trying to help a friend troubleshoot his older 15" Macbook Pro 1,1. He said he was using it on a plane recently and all was good. He closed the lid, put it in his bag and when he opened it next the issues began.

The backlight appears to work (it dims via the buttons) and the display output works fine (external display port) however there are no images on the LCD display (just dark grey).

It has not been dropped/squashed/otherwise damaged.

Any ideas?

Its a Core Duo 2.0Ghz running 10.6.8
