Okay,

Sooo I have SEARCHED and SEARCHED.
I've been to mac stores both in Canada and the US
and I have not had a conclusion so this little annoying issue.

let me describe it, The comparison.

My old Macbook pro late 2007 model 15" blah blah blah:

Okay, so when I would be traveling
A: Watch movies on the go, before bed [VLC player] (not plugged into the wall)
B: Listen to an album [Itunes] (not on repeat, not plugged into the wall)

My OLD macbook pro would finish the movie or album, recognize that the computer is inactive and goto sleep (with the lid still up) - when I would wake up in the morning, I would have over half my battery life still ready for use.

Okay, So now My new Macbook pro ($3200 BTY) Will finish the movie or album just the same.... the computer will "look" like it goes to sleep. yet.
It will drain my battery completely EVERY TIME. mind you my battery lasts about 3 hrs longer than my old mac book.... so this is very annoying..

(( Okay, so Its not quite the sleep function itself, because: If I stay up & finish the movie / or album and close the lid to my mac [while still unplugged] it will go to sleep properly and my battery will save itself, exactly what I want to happen on its own ))

Okay. now to update my trouble shooting:
It has nothing to do with the settings, I'm a decent nerd who has been using macs for 6 years now. I understand the OSX and the setting involved with the battery and power saver options. I thought it might be the update for VLC... but Since this is happening not only when using VLC but also Itunes I ruled out that.....

My only other theory.. is that I have some runaway program not apart of the OSX that I installed after the fact, that has some back ground process or "something" running. any way... Since I travel alot. this is very very annoying..

and NEVER happened once on my old macbook pro...

has anyone ever experienced something similar?
are there programs that can help me search for background running functions?

any help would be awesome! sorry if my explanations are complicated!

Best
