Ok, here are few details related to my issue. I have a MacBook Pro with Lion currently installed. When I boot regularly it comes up with my account picture, I click it and enter my password. It seems like it is trying to do something, but then goes back to the same screen with my account login area. This repeats as many times as I try to access it. This happens during safe boot too.

I booted into the recovery partition and ran disk utility. Tried to repair the volume, but it failed. Can't erase the volume because it gives an error. Can't mount the volume to reinstall the OS. So I swapped out the HDD with a different one. Put in my Lion OS disk (Which worked fine on my other mac) and tried accessing it by holding C and by holding option. Both ways give me "no symbol"

Any ideas on how I can format this HDD and get it to mount so I can attempt a clean OS install or any way I can get the optical drive to boot so I can install the OS on a different drive?
