I've googled this for a few days and have found a few people with similar problems but no solutions.
The other day I turned on my laptop (MacBook Pro Retina 15" Late 2013 running Yosemite Beta) and it was running incredibly slowly. I checked the activity monitor to see that the kernel_task process (which I've come to see is the OS) was taking up between 100% and 1000%+ of the processor (in reality it was probably 80-90%). At this point it takes a few minutes to open any program, all movement is lagging, and if I try to back up my computer or mount a .dmg or really anything at all, the process just gets stuck. The odd part is, the computer isn't running hot (despite being constantly maxxed out) and the fans aren't running, it just moves at an insanely slow pace.
Anyone know of a fix or can I provide more information to help? This one really stumped me. Things I can remember installing before the problem began were a java update and a DivX update, but nothing else (using installer) as far as I know.
