The top row of my keyboard (fron "esc" key to "eject" key) is not responding. I cannot adjust the brightness or the volume anymore.

The only 2 keys on the top row working are the volume down key which enables expose instead of volume down and the volume up key which enables dashboard instead of volume up. The rest of the keyboard works fine.

I have done an SMC and PRAM reset but to no avail.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Go to System Preferences—>Keyboard.

See if 'Use all F1, F2, etc. keys as standard function keys" is checked or not. You would want this unchecked.

Alternatively if you want the standard function keys, and still want to use the secondary functions, you can press 'Fn' key on your keyboard combined with the F1, F1, etc. function keys to the same effect.

If you're curious, if you want to use the standard function keys:
F8 for "Spaces", F9 for "Exposé", F10 for "Show all application windows", F11 for "Show desktop", and F12 for "Dashboard"; to use the brightness, volume, etc. you would press and hold 'Fn' before pressing any of the function buttons.
