Macbook Pro lags when deleting/adding things on desktop

So, I have a mid 2009 Macbook Pro 13" running 10.9.4 and recently it started lagging when I created a new folder on my desktop or if I deleted something. There's a tiny bit of a delay and it's more of an annoyance than anything but I would like to know if it's my computer or Marvericks or what. It doesn't do it in finder just the desktop. Thanks!
