I upgraded my old macbook to a MBP 15" (2.53 i5) a few weeks ago, and I've noticed that the hard drive is very slow. A few days ago it got to the point where programs would stall as it would wait for the hard drive to respond, so I tried reinstalling OS X. Now the computer is a little smoother, but it still feels as though icons and thumbnails take an excessive amount of time to load (at least longer than my old macbook). I ran an xbench test on the computer (http://db.xbench.com/merge.xhtml?doc2=508688). The results show that the hard drive is definitely a bottleneck, but I'm not sure if this is just because it is a laptop hdd. Can anyone tell me if this performance is on par with other MBP's that have a 5400rpm hdd.

5400 rpm < 7200 rpm.

Laptop hard drives are very slow, especially when compared to the SSDs that people are putting in their macbook pros.

It feels like the performance is slow though even for a laptop hard drive. If anyone with a similar computer can compare their xbench specs to mine, I'd greatly appreciate it.

RE: Macbook Pro (Late 2010) Poor HDD Performance

I have a 13" MBP from late 2010, and xbench reports my HD speeds faster than yours (I have the 250GB 5400rpm drive), and I feel like mine is slow. So yours must feel even slower. I'm looking at this thread because it'd be nice to compare my score with others, as I'm looking at upgrading to an SSD unless there's something wrong giving my HD poor performance...

I think your drive is broken, my original 5400rpm did score about 50 in xbench.
THe drive should reach read speeds close to 70mb/sec, yours max at 10 mb/sec

I have an ASUS Core i5. It's so fast, I can't click it fast enough sometimes.

It has a little door underneath that allows me to change the hdd if it ever goes bad.

How much will Apple charge you to replace a hard drive?

Nothing at all.
