Hello - I have an older neighbor I was chatting with and he said his MacBook Pro was really slow and I mentioned it could possibly be upgraded, so he sent me the specs and it looks like it's a late 2011 MBP i7 2.2ghz with 4GB RAM, and I assume some variation of a spinning HD.

Putting in a 500GB SSD and 8GB ram would be pretty straightforward for $120 or so, but I found out it's capped at High Sierra, and it looks like support for that may end later this year.

I've not had a Mac with a MacOS version that has reached end-of-life, and it doesn't sound like High Sierra will receive security updates after 2020 (although probably on the way for my 2012 Mac Mini I bought in 2014).

Just wondering if it should generally work after support ends, or is it a huge security risk? Just wanted to give him any caveats before putting money into the upgrade.

It sounds like he just web browses, emails, and occasionally uploads iMovies of old VHS movies to YouTube, and wasn't really looking to drop $2500 on a new laptop.

It was kind of interesting as I looked up the performance bench marks, and it looked like the processor outperformed some MacBooks released in 2015 or 2016.

Thanks.

The MacBook is one of the units that affected by the failed or failing Radeon GPU; therefore, I don't recommend investing too much in upgrading the unit.

As for security, I think High Sierra will be fine for a while. It's also possible the MacBook's GPU may fail before then although I certainly hope not.
