A few years ago the 2011 models went from being fine to overheating even when the thermal paste was changed over... they'd be around 15/20 degrees more than they should be. I wonder if the same thing will/is happening to the 2012's as I've noticed a few models I deal with act a little hotter in the past few months.

Mine 2012 non-Retina idles at around 50-55C, even with some tabs open in Safari, launched iTunes, Lightroom etc. Temperatures go up when opening these apps, but goes down quite fast and stays at mentioned temps. I clean fan from time to time, but thermal paste, from what I know, hasn't been changed.

I would say it's quite ok - could be like 5C lower, but it's ok. It's also the case of the ambient temperature and on what surface you keep your Mac. But I wouldn't worry to much if I were you. As long as you don't reach these 100C you should be fine.

Your temps sound fine to me. You should see the temps on my rMBP Mid 2015 with the dedicated graphics. That poor thing is driving two 4k nmonitors plus the internal display. It's pretty much always 60-70C idle and as high as 99C when load spikes lol

Edit: And that's *after* a repaste and fan/heatsink cleaning. I did everything right and used MX-4 too. It just runs hot. Most Macbooks run hot.

I'm in the same boat as you, and I also have the high idling temp. My MacBook usually hovers at 50º celcuis when doing nothing, but when using safari gets to 55º.

I will mention that I think apple just likes silence over temps. I rarely hear my fans rev up and they seem to just like staying around 2000 rpm.
