MacBook Pro mini display port not working in recovery mode

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro. 15" Core i7 model. The screen is damaged. Can't see anything. I have been looking at ways to restore the iOS to sell it. Currently has Lion on it. I have been using it thru a TV for my display, Mini display to HDMI cable. But when I try to reboot in recovery mode, the TV won't get a signal. I'm guessing that in recovery mode the port doesn't work.

Any advice on how to get recovery mode on my tv?
