The minidisplay port on my 2010 Macbook Pro 13' just died. I have a second monitor (23' LG, 1920x1080) that I used to connect to my MBP using that port. Can I connect my MBP to the external monitor using a cheap HDMI-to-USB connector, or do I need a connector with its own GPU like a Diamond BVU or a similar device? I want to have both screens (my MBP's screen and my external LG screen) working at the same time.

Replacing the minidisplay port is not an option, as I'd have to replace the motherboard ($300+). I also don't want to get a new computer, because my firm is giving me one in a few months.

Are you sure the port is totally dead? The only reason why I asked is that my MBP when through three display adapters before it worked with one.
