Hi
My 2008 MacBook Pro A1261 shows a black screen at startup. The sleep light is solid, the optical drive clanked, the battery is fully charged, fans are running and the charger connector lite is green. Tried SMC and PRAM resets - no joy.
This machine has had relatively little use since I purchased it and of course its warranty has run out.
Any ideas?
Thanks.

Can you see anything on the screen, maybe with the help of a flashlight? (If the backlight has failed, you can still see stuff if you look closely.)

Do you have an external monitor you could hook up? (Trying to narrow down the possibilities.)

Dead GPU. You could find someplace to replace the GPU but this is ancient and it will die again months later, so I wouldn't recommend it.

Do you mean no chime? I think I didn't interpret the part about the sleep light correctly. You mean it stays solid, doesn't go off after you try to start? If so, it's not worth bothering with an external monitor. Try taking one of your RAM sticks out.

When I press the power the lite comes on and stays on - along with the fan etc. Yes, no chime. Tried the ram swap but still nada.

Was thinking about re-flow on the GPU with a heatgun or oven.

Looks like Mr. Rossmann may be right. You could take it to an Apple Store if there's one nearby and let them test it before you try the heat treatment.

A "MacBook Pro A1261" is now 8+ years old, right?
No longer worth fixing unless it can be done "on the cheap".

Otherwise, time to start shopping for a replacement, either a "new" one (2016 or 2015 production model), or at least "newer" ...

Yup - thats why I'm considering the heatgun /bake method - not much to loose..
