l heard it is unnecessary to have it, but surely it would do no harm if had it running?
For anti keylogging software, l always use 'safekeys v3' to login to accounts, is it necessary for macs? if not why not? since nothing is 100% , surely at the minimum using safekeys does reduce your chance of being key logged and having an antivirus like AVG also.

what buttons need to be pressed for the PC equivalent "msconfig"?

Either you have severe OCD or are extremely careless with your computers.

I've been running Windows without anti virus software for years. Similar to iPhone cases or covers and the like, they only exist to protect people who are careless.

Personal computer? I wouldn't worry about it, we use ClamXav at my company and haven't had any problems with it.
