MacBook Pro not always shutting down.

I cannot turn off my Mac. Reset NVRAM, SMC, Reinstalled OS, still the same:
I usually turn it off by pressing Command+Option+Control and the Eject Key. It get's stuck in a white screen with the cursor. I can move the cursor and the only way to get it out of there is by pressing the Force Quit key combo.
When I do, spinning ball and goes back to login screen. The second time around may shut down.

Would this be software or hardware related?

It can go for hours

Interestingly enough, if I Command+Option+ESC, the MBP will eventually return to the login screen.

Sounds like you have something running that doesn't want to quit. What OS and specs do you have?

Try starting up in safe mode and see if the shutdown is faster or verbose mode. Verbose mode should show it hanging on something on shutdown.

Here it is:

MBP 2011, 2.2 Ghz. Recently replaced Logic board by Apple (Because of the nasty Dying GPU issue on these models).

OS Mavericks, with latest updates.

Saw the console and I could not see useful messages.

So it was never stuck on the same message when the shutdown was stuck?

Did safe mode help? And what's the longest you've waited for it to shutdown?

I just did Safe boot and rebooted after.

Has not done it so far...

I will keep you posted.

The Mac can go for hours without turning off, just in that White screen black cursor.

Truly frozen.

Not sure when you bought it, but I hope you still have your Apple Care.
That doesn't sound like a simple problem you can solve on your own.

It did it again.

Back to square one.

This time, after an hour, I forced shut down the computer by pressing the power button for 8 seconds.

Not fun...

If you get up to ~15 minutes I'd give up. If you booted with verbose mode that whole shutdown there where no "verbose messages"?

Safe mode didn't help either?
