My 2017 doesn’t always charge when plugged in.

when it’s misbehaving it will either say ‘plugged in not charging’ or it won’t even say that it’s plugged in.

sometimes switching the charger to one of the other usbc ports works.

sometimes turning the charger off at the socket and back on again works.

sometimes restarting the computer works.

I’ve tried resetting the SMC but this hasn’t helped.

I’ve tried reinstalling MacOS but this hasn’t helped.

does anyone know what the problem might be and how to fix it?

many thanks.

If it's not a different cable, it's probably the logic board. I had these same issues and it was the problem for me.

Call Apple CS and explain it to them and that you can't afford a new cable. You'd be surprised how easily they will send you parts. Directly ask the rep to send you a USB C cable. I'd be surprised if he declined.

Does the logic board get changed when the keyboard is replaced? Because I only started noticing this problem when my Mac had the keyboard replaced.

NO. Some here would argue with me till their blue in the face and it's this forum that got me believing that was the case. But I assure you, according to both, the tech and relationship specialist, they are two totally separate things when getting serviced.

I think the best way to get them to help you, is to say "ever since you guys replaced my keyboard, this has been happening". That way you can link it happening to them and not you and in turn, will have a better chance getting it fixed. Of coarse that depends on how long ago they replaced the keyboard.

So I say call em. Tell em about the issue and ask them to send you the cable so you can make sure it's not the cable, before you send it in.
