I have a new Macbook Pro purchased October, 2015. When it was first set up, it printed fine with my Brother HL-3170CDW printer. A couple of weeks later, the printer Queue would tell me the printer is not connected. Sometimes I could turn the printer on and off, then it would print something and that was it...not again. Very inconvenient. I have called Apple Support, Brother Printer, Netgear and my ISP and nobody seems to be able to help me. I deleted the printer and put it back in and that did nothing. I have unplugged and plugged everything back in, nothing. Not sure what to do now.

recent update to 10.11.1 has some updates to the drivers that run brother printers on OS X. Try that. and then remove and readd as well as reset the printing system.
