Macbook Pro problem with connect to fullhd tv

Hey everyone not sure if this has been said before, but I cant seem to find it in search. Im currently having problem with connecting my macbook pro 13" to my Sony32V5500 tv which supports FULLHD. Im using a mini display port dvi to hdmi adaptor then hdmi cable to the tv. On snow leopard it only recongnise maximum resolution of up to 1600x900 but not 1920x1080. It does also find 1080p but why cant it pick up 1920x1080 natively? Even when I choose 1080p the monitor is not showing a full pixel picture.Hope someone could help thanks.
