Hi,
I have a Macbook Pro, and the AC Adapter with which it came stopped working. The LED light would only come on sporadically, and when the cord was held at certain angles. Eventually it stopped working altogether.
I don't have Apple Care, but my Macbook Pro was still under warranty at Best Buy where I bought it. They ordered me a new AC Adapter and it arrived yesterday. It is slightly different than the original. For one, it specifically says on it that it is a "Replacement AC Adapter." Also, the LED light stays on much longer, even after it is unplugged from both the Macbook and the wall. And finally, it is a slightly different shape. But I didn't think too much about any of these things.
When I first tried it out it seemed fine. But this morning I plugged it in and saw and heard a spark where the Magsafe plug plugs into the Macbook. I tried again a little later and only heard a small zap. Later, I had the Magsafe end laying next to me, grazed it with my hand and felt what I assumed was a static shock. I was concerned about this, but it hasn't happened again since.
The part that bothers me the most is that I was working on my Macbook without the adapter plugged in, and the battery life went all the way down to the point where the computer shut off. I plugged in my new adapter, and although the amber light came on the adapter plug, my Macbook wouldn't turn back on. I waited for awhile and still nothing. Eventually I borrowed my sister's adapter, plugged it in, and my Macbook immediately jumped to life. I swapped it out with my replacement adapter, and it continued charging like normal. I experimented with this a few times. As soon as my power runs out, it doesn't seem like this new adapter can get the Macbook to turn on, even though it seems like it is still charging. Now do I always have to be careful about letting my power to get down too far? I think it's ridiculous that I'd have to go and by a new adapter when my warranty should have fixed this problem. It seems like this "Replacement AC Adapter," isn't the same quality as the original. Has anyone else had similar problems?
