Hi folks,

Haven't been home today, so haven't used my Macbook. Opened the lid tonight, and the strangeness starts. My computer isn't registering a battery, will only work with a charger. Battery icon has an "X" on it, and it says "Service Recommended." Previously have had NO problem with the battery holding a charge. Date needed to be reset. Last I checked, battery health was good.

What's going on? And how should I proceed?

As an update, I checked the cycle count - and it's high: 934. Will a battery just die like that?

Batteries can die slowly, quickly, or suddenly. macOS may say the battery is healthy but its maximum charge capacity could be very low. The fact that the date had to be reset tells me the battery completely drained while the lid was closed.

Audit posted above:
"Batteries can die slowly, quickly, or suddenly"

Like the old saying goes:
"How did I go bankrupt? Gradually at first. Then... suddenly...!"

Do you have a brick n mortar Apple Store anywhere near?
If so, might be time to take it to them and get the battery replaced.

Standard charge is $199 (in the USA).
This includes:
- battery
- installation
- a short warranty.

In my book, that's a bargain.
