I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 15", Mid 2012) that is still in use. The 85W MagSafe 2 Power Adaptor now gets extremely hot when plugged in.

The computer itself does get hot depending on what‘s being used, in to the 90s, but it is generally running well.

Apple Stores here are still all closed so a quick diagnosis is going to be difficult.

Apple do still sell this adaptor although I am aware that this model will be deemed 'obsolete' at the end of the month. Therefore parts will no longer be available.

Would it be worth buying a new adapter now while I can or is there a more likely age related issue?

I had the same issue as you. When charging, the adapter gets burning hot to the point it's impossible to hold it with your hands.

I have since replaced it for $75 from apple.com. I think it's not worth risking $75 for the life of your Macbook Pro and safety of your surrounding.
