After a lot of thought I managed to purchase a title model 15" 2012 Retina with 16gb ram 768 GB drive and the nvidia 650m brand new still sealed (I know ). After pricing up an Air using my educational discount with i7 256gb 13" this was effectively £300 more. I couldn't justify the extra £600 which would have been more than £900 over my original budget for the latest 15-inch: 2.3GHz with Retina display. The reason why I was looking at the air was next year I would be upgrading and this would be passed on to her replacing her MacBook Pro 13" i5 2011. So now she will be getting a lot better machine which will hopefully last longer. My question sorry to tell a story here is the model I got better than the current base model 15-inch: 2.0GHz?

It has a better CPU too, it's a quad core compared to the dual core in the i5

Its a great machine, I don't think you could have done better, I have that model, though not as much storage, and I think its the best laptop I've bought so congrats :)

Yes, you said earlier that the CPU was slower but really should have said it was better even though it was clocked lower.

The 2.3GHz Ivy Bridge CPU on the 2012 model is slower than the 2.0GHz Haswell CPU on the 2013 model.

Small update the Mac I have just purchased has the i7 2.7 GHz CPU so even more happy. Anyone know how the comparison with this cpu to the current base model.

My one below
i7 2.7 GHz CPU (2012)
MacBook Pro 15.4 Retina
Processor Brand Intel
Processor Speed 2.7 GHz
RAM Size 16 GB
Hard Drive Size 768 GB
