Okay, to cut a long story short I'm getting my keyboard on my MacBook Pro replaced by an apple service provider under warranty, I read somewhere about it being a whole top case as the keyboard is riveted to the case, does this mean the whole case will be changed bar the display?

Not the whole case, but the case area surrounding the keyboard, the trackpad, and apparently the battery.

This is an example of the part.

Seeing as it's all 1 piece, they switch out the whole topcase. You may very well be getting a brand new battery to boot.
