Hi all,

A friend has a macbook pro retina medio 2012, A1398. Recently it started doing some weird things. The screen went black but the macbook itself was still running. You could hear some sounds, and continue in the background. In the beginning it happened sometimes and mostly random. After a while it wouldn't turn on, you would only hear the fans spinning. Holding the power button you could shut it down.

We then tried a few times to turn it on again, but nothing happened. Just after a few more tries it booted up again and the screen was there. We were able to reinstall OSX Yosemite incase it was a software problem. After reinstalling it entered Yosemite and immediately the screen turned black. After holding the power button, it shut down. We then rebooted it, and the apple loader was there, but the OSX was malfunctioning. We then wanted to reinstall Mac OS X but it just started to crash more often. I tried to do a hardware check but it also crashed.

It isn't the screen, because it is working without a problem if it works. I think it can't be the GPU either, because of the same reason. Correct me if I'm wrong. The rest of the pc is working in the background.

What I was thinking. Maybe it's the battery, or power source. At least that's what I hope. If it doesn't get enough power, it cuts of the display and leaves the rest running?

The radeongate only happens in macbooks from 2011, so that's weird. Anyone had this problem before?
