I just noticed that my 2013 rMBP has been running a little warmer than usual, and the fans didn't seem to be as loud as they usually were when I was taxing the CPUs. I used some fan control software (I think it was just called Fan Control) to monitor fan speed when I first got this laptop, and noticed that the fans both operated around 2000 rpm (with the left being closer to 2100).
I just installed the trial version of iStat menus and opened a few terminal windows to run the 'yes > /dev/null' command 5 or 6 times, causing the CPU to quickly reach temps of 95+ C. According to iStat, the left fan increased to ~5300 rpm before I terminated the terminal processes, but the right fan was only at 1887 rpm - lower, than what I thought the base rpm was for these fans. Additionally, iStat cannot increase the right fan speed, even though I can easily adjust the left fan. I simply cannot drag the right fan's slider.
Is there some sort of a plist file that sets the maximum fan speed that may have somehow been modified by a previous fan control app? I've never tried to decrease the fan speeds; I've only ever wanted to increase them.
Any help would be appreciated!
Edit: I reset my SMC and now iStat has the right fan spinning at ~2000 rpm on default. I can now drag the slider to increase the fan speed. However, the right fan doesn't seem to want to stay at a higher rpm than 2000 - it'll increase for a few seconds before returning back to the 1997 or so rpm.
Edit2: I was able to get the fan speed to increase with the 'yes > /dev/null' commands, so the system is obviously able to control the right fan. However, iStat doesn't seem to be able to. I asked my friend to download and try iStat, and his works flawlessly (on the same 2013 rMBP model).
