With my 2010 15" MBP's 1 year limited warranty running out in December, I was just wondering if anyone has any advice on what to look for or tests I can run to check up on the hardware and keep my MBP healthy.

I usually run Onyx once every couple weeks to keep the operating system running smooth. I also have Drive Genius, but have not used it much.

What are the most common problems that people run into after the 1 year period?

most common with most computers is probably hard drive failures.

what is the point of onyx? I have it but i've never used it...

They drop their macs.

I have never dropped mine thankfully. I am very cautious with it.

I use Onyx just to clean out all the caches and useless stuff basically. Also to repair disk permissions. Just basic things to keep the operating system performing in top shape. There are other features too, but I don't see any need for them at the moment.
