Macbook Pro slowed by Skype

I am posting this for my sister. She is currently studying in South America, and so she Skypes a lot. Anyway, it's really slowing down her computer.

I know Skype takes a lot of CPU% to run, but are there any tips to run things more smoothly? It's a Macbook Pro from Summer 2009.

Skype is a resource hog. There's no way around it.
