macbook pro speakers skipping

i have a macbook pro running osx lion,
and the speakers make a popping/ skipping noise
after a restart it corrects the problem but when headphones are plugged in the popping/skipping starts again

Did you have this issue on your previous installation of OS/X that wasn't Lion? It could be that there are some bugs to be worked out in Lion as it is obviously in beta still.
