Hi all. I have a Mid 2014 MacBook Pro with 128GB SSD and 2.6 GHz i5. I got a 480GB AuraPro X SSD from OWC and will be returning it due to just not working right. Kernel panic coming out of standby (they had me turn off standby but it’s not good for battery and long term) and screen flickering.

Apple support said I can only get a 256GB from them unless I had a 2.8 GHz processor to avoid problems. Cost probably $500

What problems would happen?

I see someone selling an unused Apple 512 GB SSD ($440) that they say is compatible with my model. I’d like to not run out of storage.

Any advice is appreciated.

The safest and most hassle-free replacement would be an OEM apple drive.

Thanks.

That's what I'm leaning toward. I'm just curious why Apple said the largest one they'll sell me due to my 2.6 GHz processor is 256GB and not the 512Gb which I'd like. How would the processor affect the SSD?

Maybe a 256 GB SSD was the largest size available with your MacBook? YES

Does seem crazy that apple would say such a thing. YES

So said the Apple rep at the store tonight. He said he did not know why any Apple rep would say 1) I could buy an SSD at the store and 2) the processor would have an effect on the size of the SSD.

I think the person I chatted with a few nights ago just looked at the spec sheet for the year model I had and saw that the 2.8 GHz one came with a 512GB SSD new.

I have found an original Apple SSD 512GB on Amazon that was pulled from a MacBook Pro but never used. Should be what I'm looking for.

thanks for the help

The cpu speed should make no difference. All late 2013 MBP through early 2015 MBP Flash Storage Drives are compatible. The only difference is that one from a 2015 model will be faster than the late 2013/mid 2014 ones.

I just recently installed a 512GB Flash Storage Drive pulled from an early 2015 13" MBP and put it into my late 2013 15" MBP. I've had no problems with it. (It's been very handy with my 2016 15" MBP in for repairs.)
