To be fair this is not the first but actually the 3rd time it happens but this should be the worst. The first two times it crashed was because of the hard drive so I believe it's what happens right now.

My mac pro turns gray screen when I turn it on. When I do the resetting PRAM by using cmnd+option+P+R, it keeps turn off and on until I release the buttons.

When I use cmnd+R, it gets me to the Disk Utility but I cannot back up the files from my portable hard drive, I cannot install Maverick. When it asks me to restart, grey screen will happen again. When I use Disk Utility to verify and repair disks, it says both disks are okay.

What's wrong with mine and what should I do?

Thank you!

What do you mean grey screen? Do you get an Apple logo or nothing?

If nothing, press and hold option as you start your computer. Does your drive show up? If yes, select it. What happens then?

If it gets stuck with the Apple logo, restart and press Command-V. This is verbose mode, so it should tell you exactly what's in the boot process, and if it gets stuck anywhere. What message does it freeze at?

What do you mean it does not let you install Mavericks? What happens?

Thank you for the fast reply.
It was the grey screen with the logo and waiting icon.

Before when I used cmnd R, it showed me the disk utility. I tried all of the options. Verifying and repairing said that both disks are okay but the options like backing up from time machine, installing the maverick, asked me to restart the computer. Once I restarted, the computer went back to that grey screen with Apple logo.

Now though, cmnd V, cmnd R, cmnd option P R all don't work. It keeps at grey screen with the logo and waiting icon.

What should I do?

So I try again. When I click cmnd V, the screen freezes at:

Hfs_remove_orphans: failed to start transaction
BootCacheControl: could not unlink bootcache playlist /var/db/BootCache.playlist: 22 Invalid argument
