Macbook Pro still crashing after clean install

chromeman

macrumors newbie
Hey there,

I've done various amounts of digging on this and running out of ideas.

Have a Macbook Pro 15" (purchased in 2010). Running High Sierra but this has happened on previous OS' as well. 500GB HDD. 8GB memory. 2.66 Intel i7 processor.

I've done a full format on it and not brought any old files or applications across and is just crashed again. Hard drive replaced with a new one around 2 months ago by a repair service.

Log below.

Any help appreciated!

Thank you.

I can think of a couple of possibilities.
If you still have the orginal restore DVD, which is likely a white, Snowleopard DVD, should have the hardware dignostics on that DVD. restart with that DVD in the drive, holding the D key.
Should boot to the hardware test. Run both the standard, and extended tests.

The crash report seems to key on graphics card issues, so that's why I asked about the hardware test, just to see if you get any error reports when you run that test.

Or, maybe your hard drive just does not work well with High Sierra. An SSD would be a wonderful upgrade to even an 8 year old laptop, assuming you still want to put money into keeping it going.

looks like graphics card gone bad. not much you can do with it at this point since it is obsolete. Maybe try downgrading to El Capital just to rule out bugs in 10.13, but I highly doubt it's a software issue.

Kernel panics *can be caused by bad drivers but I don't think that's the issue here.

Edit: contrary to what the user above suggested, I do not recommend upgrading any more hardware because it'll just be waste of $ at this point.
Edit 2: try booting from an external HDD using USB, to rule out HDD cable failure.

Good luck.

Thanks to both of you. Very helpful and a couple of things to try. If not, looks like it might be finally time to put the hand in the piggy bank!

Really appreciate you being so prompt.

Hello. Do not know about the panic reported, but i recently tried upgrading the RAM (6GB) in a 2008 macbook pro and kept receiving a grey screen kernel panic. I thought the graphics card was going out for a 3rd time, so i was ready to toss it out, but i reinstalled the original RAM (2GB) and it hasnt displayed the problem again. Also its worth noting that when i originally purchased the machine i bought RAM (4GB) upgrade kit which worked until the original graphics card **** the bed, but then never worked again without causing random panics and consistently failed the Rember tests. After the current (6GB) kit caused the panics, i decided to try the other (4GB) kit which had previously caused random panics and failed multiple diagnostic tests and lo and behold it worked and passed all tests i could run on it. I chalk it up to a loose connection somewhere underneath the battery compartment or an act of god, but i stil reinstalled the original RAM (2GB) because i do not wish to push my luck in case the higher RAM kits may have somehow contributed to the original videocard failure. Hope this helps and if it doesnt maybe it will help someone else.

Probably a bad gpu capacitor.

It probably crashes as soon as the Macbook switches from using the Intel video to nvidia gpu.

Install this patch and run the Cinebench R15 test: https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...for-kernel-panic-of-macbook-pro-2010.2044304/

If it doesn't crash, replace the bad capacitor.

I think this is also worth trying. Unlike the 2011s, I don't recall 2010 mbps as being particularly famous for graphics failures. Shoot Louis Rossmann an email, I've seen some of his vids and he seems like someone who's genuinely trying to help, I'm sure he can give you better advice than most of us from this forum.

Louis Rossmann is usually very busy, but you can buy from him capacitor with instruction and there is also video on his youtube channel how to replace this capacitor
