MacBook Pro to external monitor - intermittent blackouts

I have a 2011 MBP 2.2, i7 running OS 10.7.5 connected to an HP LP2275w with a Mini DP to DP cable. The picture is great, but the display goes black intermittently, for a few seconds, and then comes back on. I've heard of this problem from others, but haven't seen a solution.
Sleep is disabled, InsomniaX is running.
Any thoughts?
Looked for this subject here in previous threads, but couldn't find it.
