I have read some reports that apple will replace the top cover/case for free if there is significant damage.

My mac is still on apple care, and i have acquired a lot of scratches and dents and smudges on the top cover case.

can i just walk into the store and have them repair it free of charge?

thanks.

I've never heard of them replacing cosmetically damaged parts that where damaged by the user.
You should take more care of it.

They even base some of their repair costs on the condition of the MacBook, charging more if it hasn't been looked after.
