Macbook pro turn light of screen for external monitor help

I was wondering, I turned of the backlight on my macbook pro. Does this mean that the display on macbook is not on ? I am using an external monitor for my display a HP w2207h.

If you are connected to an external display and you are turning the brightness of your MBP down, why not just shut the lid?
