Had bought this third party USB C hub, picture attached for my macbook pro 2018. It seems to heat up pretty quickly when connected to an external monitor and I guess my macbook heats up as well. Is this normal? I have not used Apple USB hub till now to connect an ext monitor so don't have idea regarding this.

Yes,

Some of these devices don't have great thermal management. It's normal for them to heat up. It really varies by vendor.

I have found that Anker does a great job with their dongles. They do not heat up as much under heavy usage.

Thanks, I will try and see if Anker works for me. Appreciate your suggestions.

I bought one (another brand, multiple outputs) and found the same. A email to the manufacturer confirmed it’s normal, they suggested I use it on hard surfaces so it is allowed to keep as cool as possible.
