My older 2007 macbook pro would not start at all even though charged. Did all the usual took out battery tried to reset etc. tried different cables. Took to genius bar started up with their cable, also with their battery so need new battery. However the genius told me I could run it without the battery.Back to office took out battery no go with cable also no go with battery and cable in. any ideas? thanks

Make sure the power adapter matches the laptop. I have two MBP laptops at home, a 13" that uses a 60W power supply, and a 15" that uses 85W. My 15" once had its battery drain completely, I plugged it into the 60W power supply (without looking, I have half a dozen of these MagSafe adapters lying around, some 60W, some 85W), and it wouldn't turn on. The plug is the same and fits fine, but 60W is not enough to run a 15" MBP at peak power so it does not even bother turning on if plugged into it.
