Hello,
I live in the middle of nowhere so I use a Verizon mifi working off of 5 GB of data to connect to the Internet from home. The past few months I have gone over my data limit several times for no apparent reason--I do not watch videos or download anything more than a PDF file or relatively small PPT here or there. I know that my Mac was created to be a social creature, is it possible that the network tasks that it runs in the background such as automatic updates is putting me over my limit? I just upgraded from lion the other day, but as I mentioned this has been an issue for months. Although I use the app store elsewhere, I do not update any of my apps at home.

Thanks for reading and trying to help!

The utility that you need is LittleSnitch

This monitors all network traffic in/out of your Mac and allows you to choose what traffic to allow.

It's not free but is well known and widely used.
