Macbook Pro w/ SSD, question on speed using External HD and Final Cut Pro X files...

I have a 2010 MacBook Pro 13". I upgraded the RAM to 8GBs, and installed an SSD not too long ago that I have quickly filled up. I would like to do work on Final Cut with files on an External Hard Drive. Would I lose a considerable amount of speed in transfers, renderings, and edits doing this?

Thanks in advance for any help.....

BTW, Any good suggestions on a good 1TB portable drive?
