I wanted to replace my old Macbook Pro last year but the 2017 models were not what I wanted. My main issue is I don’t like the Touch Bar but do like Touch ID and unfortunately you have to buy a model with neither or both of these features.

I have read a lot of speculation about what may be launched in 2018 but haven’t heard Face ID mentioned. I think Apple should put this into the next Macbook Pro. It would definitely bring a ‘wow’ factor back to the Macbook.

Apple seemingly has a technological edge with Face ID that may last a year or two before others catch up. In that time Apple could sell a lot of Macbooks to people who prefer Face ID over passwords, enabling the Macbook to increase its market share.

Face ID might add some expense but customers are more accustomed to paying a few thousand for a Macbook than a thousand for an iPhone. I think adoption would be easier and it could be the ‘killer app’ that gets people migrating from older Macbooks and in some cases Windows. I think it would sell like hot cakes.

It would be simple for Apple to do because it isn’t as complicated as fitting it into a phone and it could simply be integrated with or put next to the webcam. Having built millions of iPhone X models at this point it would be easy to manufacture Face ID into a Macbook screen.

Ideally that will happen with Apple offering Face ID with and without Touch Bar. From my point of view, a Macbook Pro with Face ID and no Touch Bar would make a fantastic laptop.

1. Many Microsoft laptops have it (I think it’s called windows hello). Works on the same principle as the iPhone afaik, Apples decisive advantage is that the sensor is significantly smaller.

2. The sensor is still too karge to be mounted within a thin display assembly. That’s why we have the notch on X to begin with. Windows laptops with this tech are 2-in-1, where the display is almost as far as the MBPs body.

Bottom line: the tech is far from being there yet. Eventually though.
