Macbook Pro with Nikon Scanner LS-5000 - will not open...

New Mac user ..my Macbook Pro & Nikon Scanner LS-5000 ... scanning of 35mm transparencies seems to work well .. saves as .tif .. but when I try to open the scanned image .. i get the following message 'could not complete the request, unexpected end of file was encountered' ... image will not open...

What is wrong ???
