Ugh... okay guys, here's the situation: I got home from school tonight, went to turn on my MBP... doesn't turn on.

Tried resetting the SMC, PRAM and NVRAM, nothing worked.

What currently happens:
1. Press power
2. Can hear it checking the optical drive
3. Instantly shuts down

The worst part is... I formatted the external HDD that had all my time machine backups on it just a few days ago so I could use it at school... fml...

Any ideas what could be wrong?

have you tried just starting it up with the battery out? Just with the ac connected? How much ram is in it? Can you take one stick out and test it?

I've had this a few times with a previous MacBook - it's probably the logic board inside your Mac that has taken a turn for the worse.

You'll be off to the Apple Store to see a Genius, I guess.

Best,
Rosie.

Is there a chime?

Nope :(

Yeah, heading there now... maybe I can use this to justify buying one of the new MacBooks...

Thanks for the help guys!

Any updates on this problem, i have one which seems to be doing the same thing, hoping it wont be too expensive to fix.

I just got this problem today, but my machine *sometimes" chines b4 shutting itself off. I own a first generation MBP.

Initially, I brought my machine to a Genius for a flickering screen. So, my initial assessment was the screen inverter, as it was the tech's as well. Somehow, the problem turned out to be my logic board and some other crap, so they replaced that. But somehow this new self-shutting-down problem occurred. And they're going to replace my logic board once again to see if they can get lucky.

The Genius told me they would give me a new mbp if they can't fix it. Thank God for Apple Care.
