MacBook pro won't start up

When restarting MacBook, Apple symbol comes on, than is replaced by a circle with a line through it. Than screen will go blank, without shutting off. When I manually shut off it turns of immediately. Is my apple toast?

What that means it can't find OS X. Do you gave any partitions? Can you get into Recovery Mode?
