Hi everyone,
I got a Pro Display XDR upgrading from a Studio Display. I've suddenly noticed that the XDR seemed to have less contrast calibration compared to my MacBook Pro XDR and the Studio Display.
I tried to set the “Photography” calibration preset on all the three screens, and they all matched perfectly. These appeared to me as the MacBook Pro XDR and Studio Display has a more aggressive contrast and black level calibration in the “standard” mode.
I looked into it a bit more and came across this black level test. It says that on an ideal monitor, all of the squares should be distinguishable, even the very dark ones, and the background should be as dark as possible.
Interestingly, on the Pro Display XDR, even the darkest square is visible, while on the MacBook Pro XDR and Studio Display even the third or fourth squares seem to blend into the background.
Do you know more about this topic? I’ve always found Macbooks very aggressive in terms of contrast to make the images “pop” more, but this makes me question which reference to have, since most of the photos are displayed on laptops and cellphones which appear to be “exaggerated” on this regard
