My 8 year old dell laptop is having trouble playing mkv videos. I would like to know if a 13in macbook pro will be enough for 1080p movies and school work. I know the new macbooks are about to be announced , I don't mind buying something older if i know it will work for what school and movies.

The current rMBP will play 1080p movies just fine. And most likely it'll also handle your school work, but what exactly do you plan on running? What are the system requirements for the software you need to use?

You might install VLC on your Dell. It will play just about anything.

If the Dell can keep you going a few more months, wait until the new MBPro's are introduced.

Then you'll need to make a decision:
a. Buy one of the new models (I sense very nice updates coming), or
b. Buy one of the "just discontinued" (2015) models at closeout pricing.

Often the best value is to buy a relatively "base model" just-discontinued model...
