MacBook RD Keeps Freezing when using thunderbolt

Every-time I use my thunder bolt cable, my macbook freezes. The mouse is unusable, and the only way to use it, it my holding down the power button and restarting the computer. Any ideas what could be causing this? (it could be a hardware issue)?

version: 10.8.

Its a thunderbolt cable connected to a BlackMagic UltraStudio mini Monitor.

I have not touched the OSx since purchased. (I only had updates for itunes etc, nothing relating to my OSX)

Is it an update issue?
 
It is already updated to 10.8.5? Should I try downloading Mavericks to fix the problem?
