MacBook "rejecting" brightness change

When I wake my Mac up from sleep, and attempt to change the brightness using the function keys, I see the brightness "image" pop-up on the screen, but when I try to lower it, the brightness doesn't change.
The boxes quickly go down, but instantly go right back up to the original brightness. Running Mac OS X 10.6.4

Any ideas? Thanks

I already tried an SMC reset. as for the ambient light sensor - wouldn't it let me lower the brightness since it's dark in the room?

It should, but maybe it's smegged up??? Do you sometimes cast a shadow onto the iSight camera?

OK...I unchecked that. I'll give it some time and see if it happens again. Thanks.
