Macbook screen perpetually dark

So about a week ago my macbook started doing something funny. If I ever left it on for a long time with the screen turned all the way down when I come back and brighten the screen back up after a few seconds it plunges again into no backlit darkness. This is only fixed by restarting. I foolishly ignored this until now the restart is no longer resetting the setting. When I turn the computer on the backlight still works and I see a bright gray screen as normal but then the backlight immediately gets turned off.

I know things look dour, and it might be time that I just buck up and buy a new macbook(mine was one from the launch) but I am hoping because of the fact that the backlight still works there might be some way to fix this, like disabling power save settings(because I assume it's something wrong with these considering it only happened when I came back after letting my computer idle) or something.

update: I hooked my computer up to my television so that I could get things off of it, because of the differences in resolution I couldn't actually see anything but the center of my desktop. However I restarted my computer(not really sure why) and all of a sudden the blacklight was back! I'll keep you guys updated on the situation in case booting up while the minidvi port is plugged into something is a fix for backlight issues like these.
