MacBook screen

Has anyone had a issue were the screen will only come on when the lid is barely opened? My buddy has a older MacBook 08 don't know specs since the screen only works when it's opened about 2 inches and can't read anything. Does this sound like a bad display or the wires to the screen in the hinge. Thanks in advance

Sounds like the display cable is damaged. He can probably replace it using parts from iFixIt.
